Bambi + Zombies = FOREVER

Monster A Go-Go

Image via Wikipedia

I guess it’s not fair to say ‘forever’ as such a tryst would be so totally one sided. But hey, talk about unconditional love, right? Though I suppose having a delicious brain might be a condition. Once the brain is gobbled up, what’s left for us? You don’t bring me flowers, you don’t sing me love songs?

So a recent job application send by yours truly to ShootForTheHead.com has left me with zombies on the brain (aaah! aaah!) so I thought I’d ask the loyal readers here at HPG — what’s your favourite zombie movie?

Now, there are those of us Deadheads (wait, that’s something else) that love the classics — Night of The Living Dead, White Zombie, Dawn of The Dead, etc. There are those of us who like the cult flicks and b movies — Zombie Nightmare, A Virgin Among The Living Dead, etc. There are those of us who like foreign zombie movies, new and gorey zombie movies, corny ones, serious ones, ones that are social commentaries — really, the possibilities are endless. Or maybe you like them all. I, for one, have my favourites — Dead Set, Boy Eats Girl, Dead Snow, Zombieland, Fido, Dead and Breakfast, Dawn of the Dead (both versions give me different kinds of thrills) and dozens upon dozens more — but generally, I’ll watch anything ‘zombie’ once (including such hilariously terrible flicks as Zombiez and Monster A Go-Go).

So again, I ask — what kind of zombie fan are you? What movies/shows are your favourites?

Natalie Portman in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Who wouldn’t go see a movie with a description like this (I mean, if the title didn’t already sell you, of course):

“The timeless story of a woman’s quest for love and independence amid the outbreak of a deadly virus that turns the undead into vicious killers.”

Brain in a vat

Image via Wikipedia

Hello HPG readers old and new, and welcome to the inner reaches of my brain. Welcome to the hive mind!

I’m sure this isn’t news to any of you who read sites like HotPinkGeek regularly, but I spend a good portion of my time ‘researching’ the most ridiculous things on the internet and sharing them with those who will listen (and a few who really won’t).

Over the next few days I’ll be sharing with you my favourite lists of 2009 — websites, crazy people, whoa-worthy videos — everything you’ve come to expect from HotPinkGeek and more!

Without further ado, here’s today’s list: Websites where you can waste absurd amounts of time!

Now, I’ve not spent a lot of time organizing them into rank – in my head or otherwise – so I want you to look at this list as one solid, flowing piece of crap artwork wherein you could randomly choose a link and be whisked away to a magical land of ridiculous/funny/mind-blowing and lose the better portion of your productive work day. I am to distract and amuse!
And… go! (Click here for HPG’s Top 25 of 2009: Websites where you can waste absurd amounts of time)

Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig set dude straight

Wolverine and James Bond are not to be messed with, especially when they’re doing the whole acting thing.

Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig were trying to perform their play “A Steady Rain” Wednesday night in NYC — but some nitwit forgot to turn off his mobile phone. Jackman set the dude straight — staying in character all the while. Minutes later, the ring tone echoed through the theater again and Craig’s response was Tony-worthy.

Neither actor seemed shaken or stirred.

Attention: Ottawa and area

City of Ottawa
Image via Wikipedia

As you may or may not know, the majority of us here at HotPinkGeek are located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (with the exception of a few ditchers out-of-towners, of course).

I wanted to give our local readers a heads up about an upcoming site I’ll be launching soon:

This new site will be featuring more information about local events as well as first-hand reviews of attractions, restaurants, and festivals. That’s right! Be sure to stop by the site to see what’s going on around town! And you can bet your bottom dollar that we’ll have some cool prizes and giveaways, too — vouchers, coupons, free tickets and much more!

Keep your eyes and ears open for the new site launch — I’m excited, are you?

Review: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

cloudy with a chance picture

Last night E-ve and I checked out Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in 3D. It was a flick that made its way to my geeky things to look forward to this fall list and I’m happy that we crossed it off.

So happy in fact that I figured I’d write up a little review today.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs caught my attention as a trailer in theatre while E-ve and I were at UP! a while ago (I know that there seems to be a pattern of children’s movies in our viewing preference) and I decided then and there that this was a flick that I wanted to see. Not only was it going to be in 3D, but it looked like a good time waiting to happen.

We were not disappointed. The flick starts with a flashback to the main character’s youth and his (presumably) first major invention; spray on shoes… hilarity ensues. But the first thing that caught my attention and approval in the movie was actually during the opening credits. As the names and titles rolled by in 3D the director’s line came up. We saw the usual “a film by” line but were pleasantly surprised to see the end to that line read “a lot of people”. I thought that was a pretty classy move on the part of Sony Studios and the film makers.

The movie fast forwards to the adulthood of main character Flint in his rather amazing home lab. The whole movie is based on a machine that Flint has created that will turn water into food by way of molecular restructuring. Pretty genius stuff.

There is also a pretty deep rooted father – son story here. There’s a story of a son looking for his father’s approval. And also that of a father that struggles to tell his son that he loves him and is proud of his individuality and ingenuity. It’s not a story line that boys (and maybe girls) with daddy issues are going to be able to ignore. Trust me. They also do a good job of throwing a couple of identity crises in the fold with a former child star and a smart girl that wants to be popular.

As for the presentation, I can’t say there was anything that I didn’t like about it. The 3D was amazing with food and characters flying all over the place and laughs because of it. The voice cast was well put together with jobs well done by James Caan, Anna Faris and Bill Hader. And there was a surprisingly good performance from the one and only Mr. T.

In the end the movie was entertaining, smart, funny and even a little emotional. I’ll totally recommend it to the masses and have no issue with the $30 million plus that it pulled in over its opening weekend.

High fives and pats on the back to everyone involved.

Like wham!

An Interview W/ Kevin Smith*

*Please see Writer’s note at bottom.

Good afternoon everyone, today we’re sitting down with the very talented Kevin Smith. Mr. Smith has a vast resume, but is best known for directing 9 movies (A Couple of Dicks just finished filming and is in post-production now) and playing Silent Bob in 6 flicks (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks II).

Usually Kevin is pretty wordy, except in his role as Silent Bob, but today it seems that he’s short of phrase. We’ll see what we can get out of him anyway.

I wrote earlier today on my MySpace blog about things that I’m looking forward to this fall. And it got me to thinking, what geek related things am I looking forward to?

There are always geek things on the horizon, but this fall seems to have a jackpot in store. Let’s take a look.

-NHL 2010 from EA Sports. The game launches on Sept. 15/09.

-Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The animated movie opens Sept. 18/09. We saw the trailer when we went to see UP! and the 3D was pretty awesome.

-The Heroes season 4 premiere on NBC. 2 hour episode airs Sept. 21/09.

-SNL Fall 2009 premiere hosted by self proclaimed Fangirl Megan Fox. Airs Sept. 26/09.

-Superman/ Batman: Public Enemies. The full length animated feature comes out Sept. 29/09.

-NBA Live 2010 from EA Sports. The game launches Oct. 06/09.

-Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D. The double feature launches for 2 weeks only starting Oct. 10/09. E-ve already has a reminder set in her iPhone calendar.

-Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen DVD release. Set for Oct. 20/09.

-Astro Boy. This is probably the theatrical animated movie that I am anticipating the most. Release date is scheduled for Oct. 23/09. The voice cast includes regular subject of my fawning and affection, Kristen Bell.

These are just a few of the things that I am looking forward to in a geeky kinda way. The baseball play-offs will also make me geek out, but I left them off of the list because they didn’t fit the profile as well as I would have liked.

What’s on your list?

What’s coming up for you?
