The geek slim down

image

This hot pink geek is looking to shed some of her outer soft, pillowy layer. That’s right, folks, I’m gearing up to crack down on my eating habits, exercise more, and hopefully sleep more.

Sure, you’re saying, but what does this have to do with geekiness? My love handles aren’t nerdy. My thunder thighs, while strong like a certain amazonian super hero, aren’t even remotely dorky.

What I’m looking for is advice from my fellow geeks! Like me, many of you spent much of your time in front of the computer, playing video games, programming software, building robots, and drawing up blueprints for your top secret underground lair… right? How do you stay in shape? How do you stop yourself from becoming pear shaped a la Dilbert?

You know, I’d say that this kid needs to go outside and play but he seems like the type of kid to lose at a soccer game and then proceed to squeak out profanities whilst beating the living crap out of another kid who’s face down in the grass.

So maybe it’s best that he’s inside.

My mother would have spun my head around backwards had I ever taken a video game this seriously. What about you?

Writer/Editor in Chief for HotPinkGeek January 2009 – Present

Writer/Editor for GizmoGurus September 2009 – Present
As the site is in its early stages of development, I’m really a jack-of-all-trades. I help with writing content, doing research, social network marketing and site awareness, as well as some back end design and site maintenance. I’m working in my spare time to helping to build this network of sites (TheZuneCommunity, TheAndroidPhoneCommunity, TheXCommunity, and TheWindowsPhone) from the ground up and hoping to populate it with tech enthusiasts, music lovers, gamers, and gizmo aficionados alike.

Writer/Editor for LifeSnips September 2009 – Present
I contribute gadget and mobile tech articles bi-monthly as well as work closely with the EIC to help grow the site as a valuable online resource using social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook as marketing tools.

Writer/Editor in Chief for BambiGoesGreen April 2009 – September 2009
This site, owned by a private eco company, tracks my quest to become a more eco-friendly, environmentally conscious person. I am learning, slowly, through daily research, DIY projects, and by talking to other eco-friendly individuals in the online space. The site has taken a brief hiatus in order to refocus a bit. I look forward to contributing to it in the future in its remapped incarnation.

Writer/Editor in Chief for WindowsMobile Cool (Smoke Labs) February 2008 – August 2009
I was proud editor and primary writer for the online mobile technology website WindowsMobile Cool. I was responsible for writing and researching news, reviews, and tutorials as well as maintaining the forums and interacting with readers directly. I boosted site traffic and readership significantly through social networking, newsletters, and by attending industry conferences and trade shows. I left my full-time position here to broaden my writing experience with freelance work though I still contribute casually to the site as I’m quite proud of what it has become. The site is undergoing some revamping at the moment and I look forward to contributing again in the future.

Writer/Editor for TransCanada Radio (Smoke Labs) February 2008 – October 2008
I was a writer for online Canadian music blog called TransCanada Radio. I was responsible for news, reviews, concert listings, live coverage of music events as well as press conference coverage. I interviewed musicians one on one and was responsible for all media releases on the site.

Teacher at Academy of Learning September 2006 – September 2007
I taught Computer Science and Life Skills courses to Adult WFW students. I was trained specifically in Microsoft software including Excel, Word, Access, Outlook, OneNote and Powerpoint. I taught my students how to use the internet as a resource for study and research as well as for job searching and resume sharing. I also ran a weekly seminar on communicating effectively with employers and co-workers in the workplace.

tf2_girlAs we all know by now, I’m a huge fan of Team Fortress 2.  I play on a very regular basis, almost always the same aweome clan (www.zyreal.com). With the newest update (woo! Scout!) coming out over the course of this week, it got me thinking about all the awesome things I’d like to see in TF2 updates. My imagination ran WILD, I tell you!  Well, okay, no it didn’t. But it did get me thinking about fan art.

I’ve never really gotten the whole ‘fan art’ idea — to me it always seems to make me feel dirty. It’s like I’m seeing characters in a way that I was never meant to see them.  It’s like catching a glimpse at naked NKOTB, man. Something about it just feels so… wrong! Heavy holding a Portal cake and looking surprised? It’s like… video game wank!

…But I love TF2 so much that it seems I’m willing to accept the majority of the fan art out there available to us die-hards.

I’ve gathered up a collection of fan art that depicts my beloved TF2 characters as women — what could be cooler? Nothing. That’s the answer. NOTHING.

Check it out right here!

Confessions of a Female WoW Player

World of Warcraft

Image via Wikipedia

I’m addicted to World of Warcraft.

Like so many other women out there, the allure of anonymous social interaction coupled with smashing small fish like creatures on the head won me over to the dark side of MMORPGs. However, unlike many other women, I was fragging with the best of them long before discovering the joys of 40 man raiding.

So why is it that the genre of MMORPGs (in which WoW is the unrivaled juggernaut) attract so many women who traditionally shun video games?
